Leadership Impact = Leader’s Direction x Leader’s Decisions
At its heart, leadership impact boils down to two critical dimensions: the Direction a leader sets and the Decisions they make. While countless competencies are attributed to effective leaders in literature, these two functions are arguably the most potent in shaping an organisation's destiny. Assuming an organisation has the right people, right resources, and a conducive environment, what remains for a leader to truly influence are these twin pillars.
Direction encompasses robust strategic planning and adept execution. It's about charting a clear, purposeful course for the organization.
Decision-making, on the other hand, is defined by the quality and turnaround time of choices made. It's about navigating the chosen path effectively and efficiently.
Critically, a strong direction is undermined by poor decisions, just as sound decisions cannot compensate for a misguided direction. As I elaborate in my book, Cultivate Cultured Brands, the misalignment between these two competencies can severely drain talent and profoundly degrade organisational culture.
